27/04/2012 Friday, Day #1

Period #1 Grammar 8  

We worked in groups on Predicate Nominatives. We went over the lesson in the textbook and then went on line to find more exercises. On Monday, we will go over the self test and then move on to the next exercise.

Questions on Chapter 7.3.

1.       In the story of the Roman Empire under Antony and Octavian, explain the introduction and the first complication.
2.       How did Octavian gain the favor of the Roman Republic?
3.       What were some of the titles given to Octavian?
4.       What was “Pax Romana” and how was it significant to Rome?
5.       What did Caesar Augustus do to strengthen the empire? Make a list.
6.       Briefly explain each of the following philosophies: stoics, epicureans, and skeptics.
7.       What were some benefits of being a citizen in the Roman Empire? (Page 9 )
8.       What is meant by a “second, second” language?
9.       What is a predominant philosophy of Rome that we see today emerging in North America?
10.   Define or explain the significance of the following: synagogues, Septuagint, Messiah, Palestine, Herod.
11.   Read over the “Brown Box” on page 80 and make notes.
12.   What is meant by BCE and CE? Check it out on the internet in regard to historical time.

Period #4 Literature 7Literature Test on our last unit for Wednesday, May02 This will cover the short story, play and essay. It will be a sight-piece with multiple choice, fill in the blanks, and short answer questions.
We will start poetry on Thursday, May 03.

“Incandescent Genius Questions”
1. Explain the meaning of the title of the story.
2. What are a few examples of Thomas Edison being an entrepreneur? What was is motivation to make money?
3. Give a few  examples, that show the priority that Edison placed on education.
4. How does the theme “You can’t judge a book by its cover”  apply to this article?
5. In what ways could Edison be seen as being unusual?
6. How can he be seen as being both better off than some people and not as well of as other?
7. What was, perhaps, Edison’s greatest invention? Explain.
8. What are some inventions that came about as an immediate result of the development of the light bulb?
9. Make a list of Edison’s inventions.
10. Give some examples of the effort that Edison put into his inventions.
11. What fields, other than that of the light bulb, did Edison work in?

1.       Who was Sir Edmund Hillary and what is he known for today?
2.       Who actually headed (the team leader) the expedition to climb Mount Everest?
3.       How is mountain climbing truly seen as a team or group activity?
4.       Why was Mount Everest considered such a difficult climb?
5.       What are some necessary articles of equipment that are needed for a climb of this magnitude?
6.       What are some “complications” that occurred throughout the story that increased the excitement?
7.       Explain the statement “All was done to make sure that Hillory reached the summit.”
8.       How is Tenzing really more important than Hillory?
9.       How is the climax so anticlimactic?
10.   By using examples from the account of the climb, explain the complexity of the climb and ascent.
