Period #1 English Grammar- I handed back the Map Quiz.Grammar Quiz on rules to date to be written on Friday October 14.
I talked about words and their origins. How to spell words and devices that can help. Italics and hyphen. Spelling words 5 - 10 of List #4.

We will be spending a lot more time on the Grammar rules. Some people are having difficulty in specific situations and these need to be resolved.

Period #3 History 7 - Quiz on Pages 9 - 14 on Wednesday. (BEKA quiz - fill in the blanks, true/false, and identify.)
We got into Chapter 2 and covered up to page15.
Questions for Thursday, October 13: 1. Explain the logic for why church and state were combined by the Sumerian kings.
2. How a bureaucracy can be both good and bad.
H.W.- Read Genesis Chapter 13. Make sure that you have studied to the end of page 14 for the quiz be sure to have answered Questions 4 - 9 and the Identify on page 14.

"I Meet the Sheriff". We talked about "Point of View" and "How character is revealed in a story".
We have put the paragraph on hold. We are going back to the sentence as far a writing is concerned.

HW: Read "Another April". Briefly state which element of the short story the author focuses: plot, theme, setting, or character.
Parts of the "All-Purpose Paragraph" (Always follow the rules for Formal Writing that I gave you in class)
1. Introduction -
This introduces the topic of the paragraph to the reader. It does not state how it will be covered or the context of the topic.
2. Statement -
This indicates how the subject will be covered, the point that is to be proven, the sources for proof and shows how the topic will be covered.
3. Example -
In order to prove a point there needs to be examples or sources. At this point the evidence, usually in the form of examples, is presented.
4. Explanation -
At this point the example must be tied in to the topic or point that is being made. The connections need to be made between the example and the topic. How does the example prove the point.
5. Conclusion -
This part of the paragraph reflects the statement but also comments on how it was proven.
